Unlicensed Teen Driver Arrested After Hitting Officers in Edo

The Edo State Police Command has arrested Nsikak Okon, a 19-year-old unlicensed driver, after he allegedly knocked down three police officers while attempting to evade a police checkpoint.

The incident occurred near Iyekogba Estate Gate in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the suspect was driving against traffic when he encountered the checkpoint.

Rather than stop, police say the unlicensed driver in Edo State breached the barricade, made a turn, and drove directly toward officers who were on lawful duty.

Police reports indicate that the suspect’s actions unfolded rapidly:

  • He drove against traffic approaching the checkpoint

  • Breached the police barricade

  • Turned abruptly and drove back toward officers

  • Knocked down three policemen on duty

  • Crashed into multiple vehicles before being apprehended

“The suspect knocked down three police personnel who were on lawful duty,” ASP Ikoedem stated.

The injured officers were immediately taken for medical treatment and are currently receiving care.

Following the arrest, police recovered a black Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV, reportedly valued at ₦28 million.

Further checks revealed that the vehicle:

  • Had been in use since May 2024

  • Was unregistered

  • Was driven by an unlicensed driver in Edo State

Items recovered from the suspect included substances believed to be illegal.

According to the police statement, these items include:

  • A substance suspected to be Canadian Loud

  • A Sprite bottle containing a sky-blue liquid suspected to be diluted refnol

Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
