INEC Reaffirms Commitment to Credible 2027 Elections
As Nigeria looks ahead to another election cycle, attention is once again turning to the institutions responsible for protecting the integrity of the vote. For the Independent National Electoral Commission, preparation has already begun.
Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, has reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections in 2027, stating that early planning is underway to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.
He gave the assurance in a New Year message to INEC staff across the country, describing the year as a period of renewal and an important phase for institutional consolidation ahead of future elections.
Recognising staff efforts
Amupitan commended INEC employees for their dedication over the past year, particularly highlighting the successful conduct of the Anambra State governorship election, which took place shortly after he assumed office.
According to him, the election demonstrated the commission’s ability to uphold the integrity of the ballot when discipline, teamwork, and professionalism are prioritised.
He noted that such efforts are essential to sustaining public confidence in the electoral system as Nigeria moves closer to the INEC 2027 elections.
Focus on upcoming polls
Looking ahead, the INEC chairman outlined key electoral activities scheduled before the general elections.
“We have shown that with discipline and unity, we can protect our democracy,” he said.
“As we look ahead to an exciting yet challenging year, we must fully prepare for the upcoming FCT Area Council elections, as well as the off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states.”
He added that collaboration across departments would be critical to ensuring smooth and credible electoral processes at every stage.
Commitment to credible elections
Amupitan stressed that preparation for the general elections remains a central priority for the commission.
“Our goal is to deliver a free, fair, credible, transparent and inclusive poll,” he stated.
The emphasis, he said, would remain on processes that ensure every eligible voter is empowered and every vote is properly counted.
Staff welfare and institutional values
Beyond elections, the INEC chairman also addressed internal governance and staff welfare, describing them as essential to institutional strength.
“Your welfare remains a top priority,” he told staff.
“We will continue to foster an environment where discipline is maintained, but where every staff member feels valued, protected and equipped to excel.”
He reaffirmed his commitment to building a workplace grounded in equity, mutual respect, and professionalism.
A call for continued dedication
Amupitan urged INEC employees nationwide to remain steadfast in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral system, noting that public trust depends heavily on the conduct of the commission and its personnel.
He expressed optimism that the year would mark significant progress for INEC and wished staff and their families a peaceful and productive New Year.
“Together, let us uphold the integrity and transparency of our electoral system as we continue to serve the people of Nigeria with excellence and build an INEC trusted by all,” he said.
