Buhari’s Body Arrives Katsina for Burial in Daura Amid National Mourning

The remains of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari have arrived at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina State, where tight security and quiet grief marked the historic moment.

Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in a UK clinic at the age of 82, is set to be buried later today in his hometown of Daura in line with Islamic funeral rites.

At the airport, a nine-member presidential committee appointed by President Bola Tinubu was on hand to receive the late president’s body. The delegation included:

  • Senior government officials

  • Religious leaders

  • Representatives of the Armed Forces

Also in attendance was First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, who arrived earlier in the day, dressed in black to pay her respects.

Military officers performed a brief ceremonial salute before the body was moved to Daura for the final burial rites.

A national mourning period has been declared by the Federal Government, with flags flying at half-mast across the country. Tributes have poured in from both national and global leaders, recognizing Buhari’s complex legacy as a former military Head of State (1984–1985) and two-term civilian President (2015–2023).

Further updates from Daura are expected as Nigeria prepares to bid farewell to one of its most enduring political figures.
