Cholera Outbreak in Niger State Kills 12, Infects Over 230 Across Six LGAs

At least 12 people have died and 239 others have been hospitalised following a cholera outbreak that has swept across six Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Niger State.

The outbreak was first reported on Sunday in Shiroro LGA, but by Wednesday, it had expanded to include Minna, Bosso, Shiroro, Magama, Bisa, and Munya LGAs.

Dr Ibrahim Dangana, Niger’s Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, confirmed that a multi-sectoral response team has been deployed and isolation centres have been set up in the affected areas.

“We have established treatment and isolation centres in the affected LGAs to contain the outbreak,” he said.
“Aggressive sensitisation campaigns are ongoing, targeting religious organisations like CAN and Islamic groups, as well as the eight emirates in the state.”

An isolation centre has also been activated in the old wing of the Late Sen. Idris Kuta Primary Healthcare Centre in Minna.

Dr Ibrahim Idris, Director of Public Health at the Ministry of Tertiary Healthcare, highlighted Chanchaga, Minna, Bosso, and Shiroro as the most severely hit locations.

He noted that the majority of cases are being managed in primary healthcare facilities spread across the affected LGAs.

Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago has been praised for his swift intervention, with officials expressing gratitude to supporting donor agencies for resources and manpower in combating the spread.

As of now, the state government urges residents to maintain high levels of hygiene, report symptoms promptly, and cooperate with ongoing awareness campaigns.
