Kwankwaso Welcomes Thousands of APC Defectors to NNPP in Kano

Rabiu Kwankwaso, former presidential candidate and leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), says thousands of Kano State residents have defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to join the NNPP.

The announcement came via a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, where Kwankwaso described the previous day’s defection event as "momentous."

“Yesterday was a momentous occasion, as I received thousands of defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) into the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP),” he wrote.

During the welcome event at his Kano residence, Kwankwaso assured the new members of equitable treatment and full cooperation within the NNPP. He emphasized that the state’s current leadership model continues to attract opposition figures and loyalists from other parties.

“The distinguished leadership style in Kano and our political leadership keep attracting more people into our fold,” he added.
“I encourage those considering joining to do so without any hesitation.”

The wave of defections is seen as another boost for the Kwankwasiyya Movement, a grassroots political force in northern Nigeria, especially in Kano State where Kwankwaso served as a two-term governor.

Observers say the defections signal a deepening realignment of political loyalties in northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.
