South African Government on High Alert Over Suspected Coup Plot

The South African government is on high security alert following intelligence that suggests a possible military coup attempt is being plotted. The announcement was made on Tuesday by Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, Minister in the Presidency, during her department’s budget vote presentation to Parliament.

“We’ve identified a potential risk of a coup d’état,” she said. “There are plans and systems in place to counter this and keep South Africans safe.”

The minister emphasized that the security cluster, comprising intelligence, defense, and police agencies,s is actively monitoring the threat and has already implemented preventive measures to contain any possible uprising.

Despite rising political tensions and uncertainty, Ntshavheni reassured lawmakers and the public that the country’s democratic institutions remain intact.

“The issue is under control,” she said. “We remain committed to maintaining national stability.”

Authorities have asked South African citizens to remain calm, avoid speculation, and report suspicious activities to the police.

The government also noted that ongoing investigations are being conducted and further information will be provided as developments unfold.

The announcement comes at a time when political divisions and instability have sparked wider concerns across the region. While details remain classified, analysts say that this proactive transparency is part of an effort to maintain public trust and deter any destabilizing forces.
