Buhari's Death Marks End of Political Era in Nigeria — AGF Fagbemi

Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has described the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari as “the end of an era in Nigeria’s political and moral history.”

In a heartfelt condolence message, Fagbemi hailed Buhari as a leader of rare integrity, whose tenure left an indelible mark on the country's governance, legal reforms, and national character.

“He will be remembered with profound respect for his unwavering dedication to God and country,” the AGF wrote.

According to Fagbemi, Buhari’s presidency ushered in “landmark statutes, bold policy initiatives, and far-reaching institutional reforms,” including:

  • Modernization of correctional services

  • Strengthened anti-money laundering systems

  • Electoral and policing reforms

  • Devolution of powers for deeper federalism

  • Good governance frameworks

He also credited Buhari for initiating Nigeria’s successful legal challenge to the $11 billion P&ID arbitral award, a feat later completed under President Tinubu’s administration.

The Attorney General revealed that even after stepping down, Buhari continued to serve the nation with unrelenting dedication.

He recalled how the late former president traveled to Paris in January 2025 to testify in Nigeria’s legal battle over the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project, saying:

“Despite the demands of age and the comfort of private life, former President Buhari selflessly agreed to serve as a witness. He bore testimony for the country he loved with rare and steadfast conviction.”

Fagbemi expressed sympathy to President Bola Tinubu, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, and the wider Buhari family.

“Nigeria has lost a titan of principle and purpose,” he said.
