UNIJOS ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid June Salaries

The University of Jos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced an indefinite strike over the non-payment of June salaries to its members.

According to a press statement released on Thursday, July 3, the strike will officially commence at 12:00 a.m. on Friday, July 4, if salaries are not paid by 11:59 p.m. the night before.

The announcement was made public during a media briefing in Jos, Plateau State, where ASUU branch chairman, Prof. Jurbe Molwus, emphasized that the decision follows a resolution passed during the union's congress on June 4, 2025.

“This is to request all members to abstain from lectures and statutory meetings if our salary for the month of June is not paid by 11:59 p.m.,” the statement read.

“This aligns with the standing directive from ASUU's National Executive Council (NEC), which allows branches to take action if salaries are unpaid by the third day of a new month.”

Strict Enforcement Begins July 4

Prof. Molwus added that a strike monitoring team will be deployed to ensure total compliance from academic staff.

Key directives include:

  • No participation in lectures

  • No attendance at faculty or departmental meetings

  • Full adherence to strike action "until otherwise stated"

What’s at Stake?

  • Academic calendars could be disrupted

  • Students may face uncertainty in lectures and examinations

  • Tensions between university staff and government authorities may deepen
