Senate Calls for National Monument to Honour Late President Muhammadu Buhari

The Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government to immortalise the late former President Muhammadu Buhari by naming a national monument in his honour.

The resolution was adopted during Wednesday’s plenary following a motion sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who described Buhari as a “great patriot” and a man who “left an indelible mark on Nigerian history.”

The Senate also applauded the Federal Government for organising a state funeral, and observed a minute of silence to honour the former leader, who died on Sunday, July 13, at a hospital in London.

“As I move this motion today, I am reminded of the transient nature of human life,” Bamidele said.
“However, our consolation is that our former President led a successful and fulfilled life, both as a gallant soldier who rose to the peak of his military career and as a democrat who served two uninterrupted terms as President.”

He traced Buhari’s political journey from his early presidential bids in 2003, 2007, and 2011 to his eventual victory in 2015 under the All Progressives Congress (APC). He also highlighted the reforms and socio-economic contributions made during Buhari’s two terms.

Several senators joined in paying tribute:

  • Sen. Abdul'aziz Yari (APC, Zamfara) described Buhari as “a man of integrity, without corruption, and who fears God.”

  • Sen. Seriake Dickson (PDP, Bayelsa) lauded Buhari’s rare legacy as both a former military Head of State and a civilian President, calling the honour shown by President Bola Tinubu “a new national standard.”

Senate President Godswill Akpabio also weighed in, saying:

“The nation will miss Buhari for many years to come. His legacy will continue to guide and inspire future generations.”

Following Buhari’s death, President Tinubu declared seven days of national mourning, during which flags were flown at half-mast across the country. In solidarity, the Senate suspended plenary for one week.

The Senate’s motion closed with an appeal for Buhari to be memorialised in a permanent, national way a monument that would preserve his contributions and inspire generations to come.
