TCN Denies Responsibility for Abuja Power Outage, Counters AEDC Claims
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has firmly denied responsibility for the recent power outage that affected several areas in Abuja, sparking a public back-and-forth with the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).
In a statement released on Thursday, June 27, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah rejected claims by AEDC that the blackout was caused by a technical fault on TCN’s part.
Earlier, AEDC had blamed the outage, which affected locations such as:
-
Dilic Hotel
-
Prime Plaza
-
Exclusive Stores
-
Gilmore
-
Takwa Crescent
-
Former Zartech
-
PENCOM and AMCON offices
on a “technical fault” from TCN’s infrastructure.
TCN’s Response: “Our Feeders Are Working Normally”
Mbah refuted that assertion in clear terms:
“The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) informs the public that the power outage affecting these areas is not due to any technical fault from TCN, contrary to AEDC’s claim.”
“TCN’s feeders serving these areas are not experiencing outages. For emphasis, they are functioning normally.”
Residents Left Confused
With both utility companies offering conflicting explanations, residents and business owners in the affected parts of Abuja remain in the dark, both literally and figuratively.
The lack of clarity on the true source of the outage has only deepened public frustration, as power supply in the capital continues to be unreliable and poorly communicated.
What’s at Stake
-
Trust in power utility transparency is eroding
-
Confusion may escalate without clear, coordinated public updates
-
Businesses in key locations face disruptions and rising costs
This incident highlights an ongoing challenge in Nigeria’s power sector: the disconnect between generation, transmission, and distribution stakeholders, and how lapses in communication often leave the public caught in the middle.
