Jigawa State Government Cuts Fertiliser Price by 50% to Support Farmers, Boost Food Security
In a major relief for farmers, Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has cut the price of NPK fertiliser by 50%, setting the new price at N28,800 per bag. The move is aimed at stimulating agricultural productivity and improving food security in both the state and the country at large.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Sen. Mustapha Makama, Chief of Staff to the Governor, alongside members of the State Committee on Fertilizer, after a high-level meeting at the ALGON Secretariat in Dutse.
“This gesture is designed to empower farmers, enhance food production, and stabilize the state's agricultural economy,” Makama said.
Rabi'u Khalid, Managing Director of the Jigawa Agricultural Supply Company (JASCO), disclosed that the state government has earmarked over N2 billion for fertiliser procurement.
He added that distribution has already commenced across 47 functional JASCO outlets, urging farmers to purchase directly from the designated stores to avoid middlemen and inflated prices.
Governor Namadi issued a stern warning to fertiliser dealers and agents against diverting the subsidized product outside the state.
“We will ensure no such fertiliser goes outside the state,” he warned. “Checkpoints will be mounted on all entry and exit roads to monitor movement.”
The move comes amid rising concerns nationwide over the skyrocketing cost of fertilisers, which has threatened crop yields and made the 2025 planting season particularly difficult for smallholder farmers.
The development in Jigawa is being closely watched by stakeholders, as farmers across Nigeria continue to voice frustration over the high cost and low availability of fertiliser. The Jigawa subsidy model, if successful, could serve as a blueprint for other states looking to mitigate the food crisis.
