Plateau Governor Pledges Justice for Wedding Guests Killed in Mangu Mob Attack
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has reaffirmed his commitment to delivering justice for the families of 22 wedding guests killed in a mob attack in the Mangun District of Mangu Local Government Area last month.
The victims, who were traveling from Zaria in Kaduna State to attend a wedding in the Quan Pa’an council area, reportedly got lost and ended up in Mangun, where they were mistaken for terrorists and attacked by a mob. Eleven others were injured in the incident.
In a weekend interview with BBC Hausa Service, Governor Mutfwang described the attack as deeply tragic and said his administration is working actively to ensure justice is served.
“Conflicts tied to long-standing religious and ethnic hatred can't be resolved overnight,” he said. “But we are taking steps to ensure this specific act of violence does not go unanswered.”
He confirmed that:
-
22 suspects are currently in custody over the killings
-
The injured victims have returned home safely
-
A special delegation led by the Emir of Wase has been sent to Zaria to console affected families
-
Collaboration is ongoing with Kaduna State leaders to develop a support plan for the bereaved
Governor Mutfwang acknowledged that while the attack was rooted in communal suspicion and religious tension, innocent lives should never be collateral damage.
“We’re in touch with community leaders in Zaria for guidance on how best to support the families,” he noted. “This tragedy demands not just response, but reconciliation.”
