Saudi King and Crown Prince Mourn Death of Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari
Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have sent messages of sympathy to Nigeria following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 82 in a UK medical facility.
In separate official cables issued Monday, both leaders conveyed their condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian people, and Buhari’s family.
“The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud sent a cable of condolences and sympathy… expressing deepest condolences and sincere sympathy to the president, the Nigerian people, and the family of the deceased,” the message read.
Similarly, the Crown Prince—who also serves as Saudi Arabia’s Prime Minister—extended his own sympathies.
“His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud… expressed deepest condolences and sincere sympathy to the president, the Nigerian people, and the family of the deceased.”
During his presidency, Muhammadu Buhari was known for strengthening Nigeria–Saudi Arabia relations across critical sectors:
-
Islamic diplomacy and interfaith cooperation
-
Counterterrorism and security partnerships
-
Joint oil policy via OPEC
-
Bilateral trade and investment programs
His strong engagement with the Kingdom was seen as part of his broader foreign policy push to re-anchor Nigeria within key global alliances.
