FG Reaffirms Strong Diplomatic Ties with US, UAE Amid Visa Policy Changes

The Federal Government of Nigeria has restated its commitment to fostering strong and friendly diplomatic relations with both the United States of America (USA) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), despite recent visa policy changes affecting Nigerian citizens.

The reassurance was conveyed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, during a press briefing held on Tuesday in Abuja.

The statement follows new visa restrictions from both nations:

  • The U.S. government recently adjusted its visa rules for Nigerians, citing a high rate of visa overstays and the need for more consistent access to immigration records.

  • The changes were introduced as part of America’s global visa reciprocity process, which routinely adjusts visa durations and entry privileges.

While the UAE’s updated transit visa rules have stirred public concern, no formal notification has been issued to Nigeria regarding these changes, according to Onanuga.

Onanuga emphasized that President Tinubu has directed all relevant ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to:

  • Ensure full compliance with Nigeria’s international obligations.

  • Strengthen collaboration with foreign governments on identity verification processes.

  • Facilitate diplomatic engagement through “proper and productive channels.”

In line with this, the administration reaffirmed its commitment to the 4-D foreign policy agenda: Democracy, Development, Diaspora, and Demographics, particularly focusing on the welfare of Nigerians abroad.

“Any genuine concerns raised are being addressed through the appropriate channels, in a spirit of mutual respect and collaboration,” the statement added.

President Tinubu also urged Nigerians living overseas to respect the immigration laws of host countries, maintain valid documentation, and act as ambassadors of goodwill.

“The administration will continue to pursue the best outcomes for citizens abroad, ensuring Nigerians can travel, work, and live with dignity and respect anywhere in the world,” Onanuga noted.
