Senate Urges N200 Million Compensation for Family of Toddler Killed by NDLEA in Delta
The Nigerian Senate has recommended a N200 million compensation package for the family of Ivan Onosereba Omhonria, a two-year-old boy who was killed by a stray bullet during an NDLEA raid in Delta State.
The tragic incident occurred on July 13, 2023, during an operation at a suspected drug store in Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area. Ivan and his younger brother, Eromonsele, were at their mother’s shop when NDLEA operatives opened fire. A bullet reportedly pierced Ivan’s abdomen and grazed Eromonsele’s eye.
Following the tragedy, Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, filed a petition on behalf of the grieving family. The matter was referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen.
During Thursday's plenary, Senator Imasuen revealed that although the NDLEA acknowledged the incident, it claimed it lacked funds to sponsor the required eye surgery abroad for the surviving child, Eromonsele.
In a bold step toward justice, the Senate committee recommended that the Federal Government, with presidential approval, provide N200 million in compensation. The aim is to cover Eromonsele's overseas medical treatment and support the family after the devastating loss.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio condemned the killing and called a voice vote, which lawmakers overwhelmingly supported.
“We can’t bring Ivan back, but we can show that justice still has meaning,” one lawmaker reportedly said.
The ball is now in the Federal Government’s court to officially approve and release the recommended funds. While compensation can’t erase the pain, it could restore hope and sight for Eromonsele and serve as a warning against reckless force by security agencies.
