12 Killed in Plateau Mob Attack Buried Amid Calls for Justice and Restraint
The 12 victims of the tragic mob attack in the Mangun District of Mangu Local Government Area have been laid to rest at the Hayi Muslim Cemetery, under tight security and emotional restraint.
The deceased, including women and children, were among 31 members of the Basawa community from Zaria, Kaduna State, en route to Qua’an Pan LGA for a wedding. The group was traveling in an 18-seater bus from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, when they reportedly lost their way and stopped to ask for directions, only to be attacked by an unidentified mob.
Amid tensions, the burial took place on Saturday night, guided by religious leaders and security agencies. According to Sheikh Suleiman Haruna, who led the rites, the decision to bury the victims in Plateau was reached to prevent further ethnic or communal conflict in their home communities.
“We accept this as Allah’s will,” said Sheikh Haruna, urging the community to avoid seeking revenge and instead allow justice to prevail.
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani strongly condemned the killings, calling them “barbaric and senseless,” and pressed for swift justice. He also urged Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State to coordinate efforts to bring the perpetrators to book.
“We assure the people of Kaduna that we are supporting the bereaved families and ensuring the 11 survivors receive the best care possible at Mangu General Hospital,” Governor Sani said.
Meanwhile, the Plateau State Government also denounced the violence, promising that all responsible parties would be held accountable. Authorities have confirmed ongoing investigations and increased surveillance in Mangu and surrounding areas.
