Ekiti 2026: INEC Officially Flags Off Governorship Election Process

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially kicked off the 2026 Ekiti State Governorship Election with the release of the statutory notice on Wednesday, in full compliance with the Electoral Act.

INEC's Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ekiti State, Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi, made the announcement during a key stakeholders' meeting held in Ado-Ekiti. Political party representatives, media, and civil society groups were all in attendance.

“This meeting is both symbolic and strategic,” said Omoseyindemi. “It signals the official start of the election process and reinforces our collective responsibility to uphold transparency, fairness, and peace.”

INEC had earlier announced July 20, 2026, as the official date for the Ekiti governorship poll. In line with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, the statutory notice must be published not later than 360 days before the election date.

Dr. Omoseyindemi reminded political parties that the countdown to the election has officially begun. He emphasized the following:

  • Strict adherence to the Electoral Act for party primaries, nominations, and campaigns

  • Compliance with INEC guidelines is crucial for smooth operations

  • Peaceful conduct and responsible campaigning will be closely monitored

He also revealed that the election timeline and schedule of activities will be released immediately after the meeting, and physical notices will be posted in all INEC offices across Ekiti’s LGAs.

Reiterating INEC's commitment to free, fair, and credible elections, Omoseyindemi appealed to the media to report objectively and uphold professional ethics.

“The integrity of this election begins now from compliance with legal frameworks to accurate and responsible coverage,” he said.

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) Chair in Ekiti, Daramola Owoola, welcomed INEC’s proactive approach and early engagement.

“INEC is demonstrating readiness and transparency,” Owoola said. “As parties, we are committed to peaceful, coordinated activities that promote a calm and credible process.”

Keep an eye out for INEC's full schedule of activities, including:

  • Primary election windows

  • Campaign period dates

  • Candidate nomination deadlines

  • Voter verification and registration updates

The 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State promises to be a significant event with INEC calling for early collaboration, vigilance, and full civic participation.
