Tiv and Fulani Sign Historic Peace Pact in Taraba State

After years of tension and deadly clashes, representatives of the Tiv and Fulani ethnic groups in Gassol Local Government Area have signed a formal peace agreement in a major step toward ending recurring conflict in the region.

The reconciliation effort was spearheaded by Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, commander of 6 Brigade/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), as part of the military’s non-kinetic peace strategy.

Held at the 6 Brigade Headquarters conference room in Jalingo, the peace meeting brought together local stakeholders, including:

  • Council Chairman Abubakar Usman

  • Traditional rulers and community elders

  • Security operatives from multiple agencies

General Uwa condemned the resurgence of communal violence and warned against taking the law into one’s own hands.

“Only through respect, unity, and dialogue can we achieve lasting peace and development,” he declared, urging leaders to become ambassadors of peace.

At the meeting’s conclusion, representatives of both the Tiv and Fulani communities agreed to:

  • Cease hostilities immediately

  • Encourage continuous dialogue between communities

  • Refuse to shield criminal elements

  • Cooperate with security agencies

  • Share timely intelligence to prevent future violence

The peace deal was formally signed, with both groups pledging commitment to uphold the terms and work with authorities to ensure implementation.

Gassol’s Chairman, Abubakar Usman, praised the Nigerian Army for its dedication to peacebuilding.

“This initiative is not only timely it’s essential. We’re restoring trust and rebuilding cooperation that has been lost for years,” he said.

The peace process is expected to serve as a model for resolving similar conflicts across Taraba and beyond.
