Niger State Cancels Grand Eid Celebrations to Mourn Flood Victims
In a solemn move, the Niger State Government has announced a low-key Eid-el-Kabir celebration across the state to honor the victims of the devastating floods that recently struck Mokwa and neighboring communities.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has officially suspended all elaborate Sallah festivities—including traditional events like the Durbar and Hawan Bariki—in all emirates across the state.
The announcement came via a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, on Wednesday.
“This decision is to show respect for the victims of the tragic flood and to allow time for mourning, prayers, and reflection,” the statement read.
The governor urged citizens to use this Eid period to engage in acts of charity and pray for the souls of the departed.
“We call on the good people of Niger State to use this Sallah period to pray for the departed and to reach out with love and support to affected communities.”
According to recent reports, the floods have claimed over 200 lives, while more than 500 people are still unaccounted for, marking one of the most tragic natural disasters in the state’s history.
This unprecedented loss has prompted calls for emergency aid, continued search efforts, and long-term flood mitigation strategies.
