Edo PDP Slams Planned Demolition of Marcus Onobun’s House, Calls It Political Witch-Hunt

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the state government’s move to demolish the home of Federal House of Representatives member Marcus Onobun, describing the action as a blatant act of political victimization.

The accusation came through a strongly worded statement released on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, by Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Edo State. The statement was titled:

"Unwarranted demolition threat against Marcus Onobun and Hon. Collins Aigbogun, a clear case of political victimization."

According to Dr. Aziegbemi, the targeted demolitions include:

  • The home of Marcus Onobun, who represents Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben in the National Assembly

  • The property of Hon. Collins Aigbogun, the elected Chairman of Esan West LGA, who was allegedly impeached illegally

Both men are known PDP stalwarts in Edo State.

The state government reportedly designated their homes for demolition under suspicion of cultism. However, Aziegbemi insists that:

  • No court of law has convicted either man

  • The Anti-Cultism Law clearly states that only a conviction can warrant demolition or forfeiture

  • This move is nothing short of “a misuse of power to intimidate political opponents.”

“This is not law enforcement it is a political witch-hunt,” Aziegbemi declared.

The PDP warns that the weaponisation of anti-cultism laws against political rivals threatens not just democracy in Edo but also sets a dangerous national precedent.

Dr. Aziegbemi also cautioned:

  • Police officers

  • Bulldozer drivers

  • Demolition contractors

He reminded them that they do not share immunity with the Governor, and will be held accountable for participating in demolitions that lack a legitimate court order.

“The law does not support illegal commands,” he said. “This political victimisation must stop.”

The Edo PDP is calling for:

  1. Immediate reversal of the planned demolitions

  2. Respect for legal process and due conviction

  3. An end to political harassment of opposition figures

  4. Upholding the rule of law in all enforcement actions

They also urged civil society groups, Nigerian citizens, and the international community to speak out against the injustice.
