Federal Government Cancels 2025 Democracy Day Parade, Reveals Alternative Events
The Federal Government has officially canceled the traditional military parade slated for Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day on Thursday, June 12, 2025. The cancellation was confirmed in a statement released by Abdulhakeem Adeoye, speaking on behalf of the Director of Information & Public Relations of the Democracy Day Committee.
Instead, the day will feature a lineup of key national events, including a presidential address, a special National Assembly session, and a public lecture to reflect on the state of Nigeria’s democracy.
As part of the revised schedule, President Bola Tinubu will deliver a nationwide broadcast at 7:00 a.m. on Democracy Day. The speech is expected to touch on Nigeria’s democratic journey, national challenges, and the administration’s ongoing reforms.
Later in the day, at 12:00 noon, President Tinubu will join a special joint session of the National Assembly, where lawmakers and government officials will engage in high-level discussions.

The day’s events will culminate in a Democracy Day lecture at 4:00 p.m. at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. The theme of the lecture is:
“Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria's Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.”
Key government officials, political leaders, civil society advocates, and thought leaders are expected to participate in the session, which will examine the lessons learned over 26 years of democracy and explore reform strategies for sustainable governance.
