Osun on Alert as Religious Clashes Loom: WIP Urges Security Action Ahead of Eid and Ifa Festival
The World Institute for Peace (WIP) has raised urgent concerns over a potential crisis in Ile-Ife, Osun State, as Eid El Kabir and the Annual World Ifa Festival are set to hold on the same day, June 6, 2025.
In an open letter to Osun State Police Commissioner Mohammed Umar Abba, WIP’s Executive Director Lamina Kamiludeen Omotoyosi warned that the convergence of large Muslim and traditionalist crowds in close proximity could lead to serious unrest, given historical tensions in the area.
Omotoyosi’s message was also copied to Governor Ademola Adeleke, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, the DSS, and the NSCDC, emphasizing the need for preemptive action to avoid clashes.
“The Ifa Festival temple is located close to the Ile-Ife Central Mosque, where a large number of Muslims will gather for Jumaat prayers. Thousands from both faiths are expected, which increases the risk of conflict,” he wrote.
Highlighting a violent incident from January 2025, where Isese worshippers were allegedly attacked by suspected Muslims, Omotoyosi urged authorities to develop a joint security plan and called for interfaith dialogue involving the Ooni of Ife, key Islamic leaders, and traditional heads to foster mutual respect.
He specifically advised the Police Commissioner to hold a peace meeting with:
-
The Grand Chief Imam of Osogbo
-
The Chief Imam of Ile-Ife
-
Leaders of traditional worshippers in Osun State
“We must prevent a repeat of past disruptions. Peaceful coexistence is only possible when we anticipate potential conflict and take unified action to defuse it,” Omotoyosi stated.
The warning comes amid growing calls for religious tolerance and collaboration among faith leaders in Nigeria, especially in culturally diverse regions like Osun.
