TCN Commissions New Transformers in Kebbi, Boosts Power Supply in Northwest Nigeria
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned two newly installed electricity transformers at the Birnin Kebbi Transmission Substation, enhancing power supply across the northwest.
In a statement released on Sunday, June 29, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah confirmed that the transformers, rated 100 MVA and 150 MVA, were successfully energized on Friday, June 27, at 1:18 p.m. and 2:56 p.m., respectively.
What This Means for Kebbi and Beyond
-
The substation’s capacity has increased from 300 MVA to 450 MVA
-
An additional 120 MW of bulk electricity is now available for Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (Kaduna Electric)
-
This will benefit customers in Kebbi, Sokoto, and surrounding areas
-
The upgrade also ensures consistent bulk power supply to Niamey, Niger Republic
TCN’s National Commitment
According to Mbah, this upgrade reflects TCN’s broader mission:
“We are committed to the continued expansion and maintenance of the nation’s transmission system to ensure a more effective and efficient bulk power transmission nationwide.”
This commissioning aligns with Nigeria’s broader efforts to modernize its energy infrastructure. As of April 25, 2025, Nigeria’s total electricity generation stood at 5,148.34 megawatts, underscoring the urgent need for expanded transmission capacity to match generation output.
Why It Matters
-
Improved reliability and stability of power in northern Nigeria
-
Stronger regional energy ties through cross-border supply to Niger Republic
-
Expanded infrastructure that supports industrial and residential growth
This development is expected to reduce load shedding and improve service delivery, especially in underserved areas.
