Nigeria Set to Boost Air Power with AH-1Z Viper Helicopters, Says Air Chief

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reaffirmed its commitment to deploying advanced combat aircraft in the ongoing fight against terrorism and insecurity across the country, with the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from the United States.

Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, emphasized this during a high-level Programme Management Review Meeting held in the U.S., where he led a NAF delegation to inspect the AH-1Z Viper platforms and discuss their operation with senior U.S. Marine Corps officials.

According to Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, Director of Public Relations and Information for the NAF, the goal is to reinforce Nigeria’s combat readiness, mission effectiveness, and air superiority capabilities through the integration of the AH-1Z helicopters.

“These assets will significantly improve the Nigerian Air Force’s operational efficiency and its ability to counter terrorism and banditry,” Air Marshal Abubakar said.

He also stressed that all NAF operations would continue to adhere strictly to international rules of engagement, with a focus on protecting innocent lives and property.

The CAS expressed deep appreciation for the United States Government’s longstanding defense partnership with Nigeria, calling it a cornerstone of the country’s military modernization.

“We are fully committed to ensuring these platforms are delivered in the shortest possible time,” he said. “Every necessary step will be taken to facilitate a seamless procurement and integration process.”

The AH-1Z Viper, also known as the “Zulu Cobra,” is one of the most advanced multi-role attack helicopters in the world. Designed for close air support and precision engagement, the platform features:

  • Dual-engine capability

  • Advanced avionics and target acquisition systems

  • Interoperability with NATO forces

  • Heavy weaponry, including rockets, missiles, and a 20mm cannon

Its deployment is expected to give the NAF a formidable advantage in joint combat operations, especially in high-risk zones in northern and central Nigeria.
