IMT Enugu to Discipline 28 Students Over 'Sorting' Scandal as Rector Declares Academic State of Emergency
At least 28 students of the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, are set to face disciplinary actions after being implicated in a widespread ‘sorting’ scandal, a troubling trend where students bribe lecturers for higher grades.
The revelation came from IMT Rector, Professor Gozie Ogbodo, during a courtesy visit by intern PhD students from the Institute for Peace, Conflict and Development Studies (IPCDS) at ESUT. The Rector condemned the unethical practice and vowed to restore academic integrity at the institution.
“There is a popular cliché now at IMT: ‘The sorter and the sorted will both be punished’, because it takes two to tango,” Professor Ogbodo declared.
Upon assumption of office, the Rector said he discovered that over 70% of IMT’s academic programs were overdue for accreditation. In response, he declared an academic state of emergency.
With the support of Governor Peter Mbah, IMT successfully underwent accreditation assessments by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) from April 4 to 6.
“We scored 100% accreditation—the first time in IMT’s history all programs received full accreditation,” he announced.
IMT now offers 65 accredited programs and has implemented new policies, including:
-
Mandatory 70% class attendance for exam eligibility
-
Daily monitoring of lecturers and students
-
Strict dress codes: Only students in departmental uniforms may enter campus
-
Zero tolerance for sorting or absenteeism
Dr. Ben Nwoye, an ESUT lecturer and former APC chairman in Enugu, led the delegation of PhD students under the supervision of Professor Felix Asogwa. The visit aimed to explore practical models of conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and institutional reform in real-world settings.
“Conflict has never advanced any nation. What we’re seeing here at IMT is a case study in transformation,” Nwoye said.
He emphasized that the tour aligned with IPCDS’s mission to produce peace ambassadors who actively participate in national development.
