Serving Soldier Arrested for Allegedly Killing Ex-Military Man in Maiduguri
A serving Lance Corporal in the Nigerian Army is in custody after allegedly stabbing a dismissed ex-soldier, Musa Adamu, to death during a late-night altercation in the Kasuwan Fara area of Maiduguri.
The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who disclosed the news via a post on X.
The confrontation reportedly began as a heated exchange between the two men, both former colleagues from the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army.
“The Lance Corporal is accused of stabbing the deceased in the chest with a jackknife during the fight,” Makama reported.
Musa Adamu was rushed to the Borno State Specialist Hospital, but doctors confirmed him dead on arrival. His body was later deposited in the morgue for an autopsy.
In what appears to be a coordinated response, a senior military officer handed over the suspect to the Nigeria Police Force on Friday.
The case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough investigation and possible prosecution.
This incident has reignited public debate about discipline within the armed forces, especially in conflict-prone zones like Borno where military presence is dense due to ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
Critics have voiced concerns over the mental health and emotional strain facing service members, especially those involved in prolonged operations in the Northeast.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement, but the Nigerian Army is expected to conduct an internal review while the police carry out the criminal investigation.
More details are likely to emerge after the SCID concludes its inquiry.
