Ondo SDP Demands Attorney General’s Resignation Over Prolonged Judiciary Strike
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State has called for the immediate resignation of Attorney General Kayode Ajulo (SAN) over the ongoing judiciary workers’ strike, which has paralyzed court operations in all 18 local government areas.
Gbenga Akinbuli, the SDP’s state chairman, said the strike, led by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), is the direct result of the state government’s failure to implement full financial autonomy for the judiciary. He accused Ajulo of failing in his duty to advise the government to honor its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the judiciary.
“As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kayode Ajulo should be ashamed. His inaction is a betrayal of justice,” Akinbuli said in a fiery statement on Sunday.
Akinbuli condemned the state government's silence on the strike, calling it a deliberate affront to the Constitution. He warned that continued neglect would deepen public distrust in the legal system and worsen delays in court proceedings, including bail hearings for suspects in custody.
“This is not just about JUSUN. This is about the average citizen being denied access to justice,” he added.
In response, Attorney General Kayode Ajulo rejected the resignation call and clarified the government’s position. He stated that unresolved legal uncertainties around fund disbursement ratios and autonomy frameworks prompted the filing of a formal appeal for judicial interpretation.
“The government is not acting in bad faith,” Ajulo said. “We are seeking clarity to ensure lawful compliance, not rushing into unconstitutional territory.”
He insisted that this approach reflects responsible governance and a long-term commitment to institutional reform rather than temporary appeasement.
