Diphtheria Outbreak in Edo State: 3 Dead, Vaccination Campaign Underway

Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, has confirmed that three lives have been lost due to a diphtheria outbreak currently affecting multiple communities in the state.

Speaking during a weekend health briefing in Benin City, Dr. Oshiomhole revealed that six local government areas have reported confirmed diphtheria cases, with 15 suspected and six confirmed cases so far.

“We’ve recorded three deaths. This outbreak highlights the importance of vaccination,” the Commissioner said.

Dengue Fever Also on the Radar

In addition to the diphtheria alert, the state has seven reported cases of dengue fever, although no deaths have been linked to it yet. Oshiomhole assured residents that health authorities have activated containment protocols and that both situations are under effective management.

The commissioner stressed that the 65% vaccine coverage in the state is a contributing factor to the outbreak.

“Outbreaks like this happen when vaccine coverage is low. We are stepping up efforts to vaccinate children,” he added.

A mass immunization campaign targeting children aged 5 to 14 years is scheduled to begin shortly.

To combat the crisis:

  • The NCDC has provided 70 doses of anti-diphtheria vaccines.

  • Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo secured an additional 20 doses from neighboring Delta State.

  • The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has received emergency supplies including beds, oxygen cylinders, IV fluids, and PPEs.

Despite some vaccinated children contracting the disease, Oshiomhole emphasized that broader coverage and booster doses are necessary to control the spread.

Residents are urged to:

  • Vaccinate children immediately

  • Monitor symptoms in school-aged children

  • Maintain strict hygiene practices

  • Wash hands frequently

  • Cough into elbows

  • Keep surroundings clean

  • Seek medical help early

“Parents and schoo

l authorities must be vigilant. Early detection saves lives,” Oshiomhole said.
