Bandits Attack Mosque in Katsina During Prayers, Casualties Reported

Tragedy struck Matazu town in Katsina State when armed bandits stormed a mosque during Isha (night) prayers, leaving several worshippers dead and others injured. The late-night assault has renewed fears over rising insecurity in Nigeria’s northwest region.

According to security analyst Bakatsine, who shared details on X (formerly Twitter):

  • The gunmen invaded the mosque while prayers were ongoing.

  • Multiple worshippers were killed and others sustained injuries.

  • The attack occurred late Thursday night.

Bakatsine urged the government to take swift action, warning that attacks on worshippers in the northwest are becoming alarmingly frequent.

As of the time of reporting, Katsina State authorities had not released an official statement regarding the incident.

The lack of immediate response has fueled growing frustration among residents who say their communities remain vulnerable to bandit attacks despite security operations in the region.

Katsina, along with other northwestern states, has experienced repeated assaults on rural communities, schools, and places of worship. These attacks often result in:

  • Loss of lives and injuries

  • Mass displacement of families

  • Disruption of religious and social activities

  • Heightened fear among residents

The latest mosque ambush adds to a troubling pattern that many analysts argue demands urgent and decisive intervention.
