Lagos Begins Flood Control Channels, New Retail Hub on Island

The Lagos State Government has launched a project to construct natural water flow channels in flood-prone areas of Lagos Island, while also unveiling plans for a modern retail complex at Adeniji Adele to replace the old Pelewura iron rod market.

The initiative was announced during the groundbreaking ceremony of the new retail hub, a joint effort between the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development and the Lagos Island Local Council Development Area (LCDA). The project is expected to be completed within 12 months.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, explained that Lagos Island’s proximity to the waterline makes drainage management critical.

“Although Lagos Island is not technically below sea level, its proximity to the waterline makes effective drainage management critical. We are now creating natural water flow channels, which requires removing structures that obstruct drainage,” Olumide said.

He added that the goal is to restore Lagos Island’s functional drainage system, recalling a time when “water flowed freely” and even children could play with paper boats in the drains.

The redevelopment also includes a state-of-the-art retail center at Adeniji Adele.

• According to Olajide Abiodun, Special Adviser to the Governor on Urban Development, the project is a milestone for urban renewal on Lagos Island.

Chairman of Lagos Island LCDA, Folawiyo Alade, pledged that the project will be completed within the timeline, reaffirming the government’s commitment to sustainable urban development.
