The update was released on Thursday following INEC’s weekly meeting in Abuja. The commission also confirmed that 19 additional letters of intent have been received.

Breakdown of Applications

  • 171 letters of intent submitted as of September 3, 2025

  • INEC has published the full list of applicants on its website

  • shortlist of pre-qualified associations is being finalized for the next stage of the process

The electoral body stressed that not all applicants have met the strict requirements for political party registration.

It further noted:

  • Some associations have changed interim leadership due to defections, slowing down the process

  • Applications are still being reviewed in line with guidelines

  • Nigerians will be regularly updated on the commission’s progress and decisions

The wave of applications reflects the growing demand for political representation and dissatisfaction with existing parties. However, it also raises questions about fragmentation, viability, and compliance with INEC’s standards.
