FCT Resident Doctors Stage 7-Day Warning Strike; Demand Urgent Reforms
The Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Capital Territory (ARD-FCT) has declared a seven-day warning strike over what it describes as long-standing systemic failures in Abuja’s healthcare system.
The decision was announced in a statement signed by the union’s president, Dr. George Ebong, and other executive members.
According to the ARD-FCT, doctors in the FCT face:
Severe staff shortages forcing doctors to cover multiple areas
Broken and inadequate equipment in health facilities
Underpaid allowances and poor staff welfare
Unfavorable working conditions leading to burnout
Ebong warned that the health system is at risk of complete breakdown if urgent steps are not taken.
The resident doctors stressed that the strike is not merely about wages but about revamping a collapsing health system.
“The FCT health system is a long-standing systemic failing that needs quick and complete overhaul,” Ebong said.
He emphasized that neglect by authorities has worsened pressure on doctors and placed patients at greater risk.
Last month, ARD-FCT had issued a call to government for immediate intervention to address mounting challenges in Abuja’s health facilities. With no action taken, the union resorted to industrial action.
