VP Shettima Backs Two-State Solution for Palestine at UNGA
Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed support for the two-state solution as the most credible path to achieving lasting peace between Israel and Palestine. He made the remarks during his address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Wednesday.

Shettima emphasized that Palestinians deserve the same rights and freedoms as any other people across the world.
“The people of Palestine are not collateral damage in a civilisation searching for order, they are human beings, equal in worth, entitled to the same freedoms and dignities that the rest of us take for granted,” he said.
He described the plight of civilians in Gaza as unacceptable, noting Nigeria’s concern over the aggression and violence inflicted on innocent populations.
Key Highlights from His Address
Two-State Option: Nigeria sees the establishment of two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side as the most respectable and sustainable peace framework.
Solidarity: Shettima stressed that Nigeria will not remain indifferent to humanitarian crises, whether in neighboring African countries or distant regions.
Global Justice: He highlighted the importance of fairness, dignity, and equity in international relations, referencing recent attacks in Gaza and what he described as the illegal attack on Qatar.
Nigeria’s statement at UNGA reflects its longstanding foreign policy of supporting multilateral solutions to global conflicts while advocating for the protection of human rights and sovereignty. With violence in Gaza drawing global condemnation, Shettima’s speech places Nigeria firmly among countries urging for a diplomatic settlement based on the two-state model.
