Qatar Tightens Visa Rules for Nigerian Tourists

The Qatari Ministry of Interior has announced new visa restrictions for Nigerian tourists, citing recent cases of overstays. The rules, which take effect immediately, significantly tighten eligibility for visitors from Nigeria.

Under the new policy, Nigerian travelers must now meet stricter requirements before a tourist or transit visa can be issued:

  • Mandatory hotel reservations before application.

  • Confirmed return flight bookings are required.

  • Eligibility limited to women and families — unaccompanied male travelers no longer qualify.

  • Only five-star hotel bookings accepted for visa approval.

  • Pending applications will also be processed under these new rules.

According to Qatari authorities, the stricter measures were prompted by multiple cases of Nigerian visitors overstaying their visas. The government says the new approach is aimed at ensuring compliance with immigration laws and preventing abuse of the system.

The new rules are expected to significantly reduce the number of Nigerians eligible to visit Qatar, particularly male travelers and those unable to afford luxury accommodation.

Travel analysts warn that:

  • Costs for Nigerian tourists will rise sharply due to the five-star hotel requirement.

  • The gender and family restrictions could limit travel for business or solo trips.

  • Nigerians with pending visa applications may now face cancellations or additional requirements.
