President Bola Tinubu has acknowledged the delay in appointing Nigerian ambassadors, describing the process as difficult and time-consuming.

In a video message to Nigerians, Tinubu explained that the challenge lies in ensuring that ambassadorial nominees are carefully chosen, not just “anybody.”

The president noted that he still has several ambassadorial slots available, but emphasized that economic revival and restoring hope for Nigerians remain his immediate priorities.

“I couldn’t appoint everybody that I could have appointed. Thank you for your patience till now. I still have some slots for ambassadorial positions that too many people are craving for, but it’s not easy stitching together those names.

First of all, cure the economy, bring hope to the people as that is what we stop for, and that hope is here,” Tinubu said.

  • The last set of Nigerian ambassadors was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari before leaving office.

  • Since Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023, no ambassadorial appointments have been announced.

  • Pressure has been mounting from stakeholders at home and abroad for Nigeria to fill its diplomatic posts.

Ambassadors play a crucial role in representing Nigeria abroad, securing trade deals, and maintaining diplomatic ties. Prolonged vacancies could affect Nigeria’s foreign relations, economic diplomacy, and consular services for citizens overseas.
