CAN Urges Nigerian Leaders to Put People First During Eid-ul-Maulud

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on political leaders to prioritize the people’s welfare and embrace values of justice and compassion as Muslims nationwide mark Eid-ul-Maulud, the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

In a goodwill message released Friday, CAN emphasized that the Prophet’s virtues of justice, humility, compassion, and devotion to God remain universal principles that transcend religion and offer guidance for building a peaceful and fair society.

“As our nation marks this occasion, we are reminded that Nigeria stands at a critical crossroad. The challenges of governance, economic hardship, and the deep yearning for credible leadership call for renewed commitment to principles that promote fairness, accountability and compassion,” the statement read.

CAN urged political leaders to:

  • Embrace justice in decision-making

  • Ease economic burdens on citizens

  • Foster policies that strengthen unity

  • Uphold the dignity and rights of every Nigerian

The association stressed that integrity and fairness must guide governance if Nigeria is to achieve peace and prosperity.

In his remarks, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN President, extended warm wishes to Muslims across Nigeria:

“On behalf of the Christian community, I extend warm wishes to all Muslims for a peaceful and joyous celebration. May this Eid-ul-Maulud inspire stronger bonds of unity across faiths, renew our shared hope for Nigeria, and encourage us all to work together for a just and prosperous nation.”

The message comes at a time of widespread economic hardship and political discontent, with many Nigerians calling for leaders to deliver policies that prioritize the public good over political interests. CAN’s call highlights the role of interfaith solidarity in pushing for accountable governance.
