Kalu Aja Urges FG to Give Lagos Extra Infrastructure Support

Financial educator Kalu Aja has argued that the Federal Government should prioritize Lagos State with additional infrastructure support, given its critical role in Nigeria’s economy.

Aja made the case in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, following the release of federal project spending data by the Tinubu administration.

On Monday, the Federal Government published infographics detailing capital projects by region, asserting that “no Nigerian is second-class, and no region is left behind.”

However, the data did not specify how much was allocated to Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub and home to a large concentration of federal assets.

In response, Aja stressed Lagos’ importance:

  • Lagos hosts more federal assets than any other state, including the FCT.

  • If Lagos’ economy stalls, Nigeria’s GDP would also stall.

  • At least 1% of the federal capital expenditure (CAPEX) should be dedicated to maintaining federal assets in Lagos.

“I personally believe that Lagos State should receive exceptional infrastructure support from the Federal purse.
Lagos State holds more federal assets than any other state, including the Federal Capital. If Lagos’ economy stalls, Nigeria’s GDP will also stall,” he wrote.

He criticized the federal communication strategy, saying it risked “gaslighting, confusing, and being downright childish.”

Lagos contributes significantly to Nigeria’s GDP, tax revenue, and international trade. Infrastructure strain in the state has long raised concerns about sustainability, especially with rapid urban growth and population pressure.
