EFCC Links Nigeria’s Economic and Security Woes to Corruption
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has connected Nigeria’s persistent economic hardship and security challenges to decades of corruption and misappropriation of public funds by politicians and public officials.

EFCC Chairman Ola Olukayode made this point on Wednesday while delivering a keynote speech at the annual conference of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria in Delta State. He was represented at the event by Mr. Williams Oseghale, Assistant Commander and Head of Public Affairs, EFCC Benin Zonal Directorate.
Olukayode stressed that corruption is the foundation of nearly all of Nigeria’s socio-economic struggles.
“Every challenge around Nigeria’s socio-economic development today can be traced to the consequences of corruption. The rising problems of unemployment, insecurity, poverty, diseases, low life expectancy, hunger, kidnappings, and others are the results of mismanagement, misapplication, and embezzlement of our resources by those entrusted with them,” he said.
The EFCC boss urged Nigerians to embrace responsibility, accountability, and transparency in both public and private life. He emphasized that effective governance is only possible when citizens and leaders alike fulfill their duties with integrity.
By drawing a direct link between corruption and national crises, the EFCC underscores the urgent need for stronger anti-graft efforts. With unemployment and insecurity reaching critical levels, the Commission argues that tackling corruption is central to restoring economic growth and national stability.
