FG Mourns 32 Victims of Niger State Boat Accident
The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the death of 32 people in a tragic boat accident in the Borgu area of Niger State.
The disaster occurred just months after devastating floods in Mokwa, another part of the state.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the incident as a “bitter tragedy” in a statement issued on Friday.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the Government, and the people of Niger State. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been affected by this tragedy,” Idris said.
The minister announced that the Federal Government will collaborate with the Niger State Government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to ensure survivors and families of the deceased receive adequate support.
He also commended the Niger State Emergency Management Agency for its swift response in rescuing and accounting for passengers.
Idris used the tragedy to stress the importance of safety precautions when traveling on Nigeria’s waterways.
“No one should embark on boat journeys without wearing appropriate protective jackets. Safety precautions can make the difference between life and death,” he cautioned.
The minister revealed that the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has been directed to launch a nationwide waterway safety campaign aimed at preventing future disasters.
“We pray for the repose of the souls of the deceased and wish the survivors a speedy recovery,” he added.
Frequent boat accidents in Nigeria highlight the risks of inadequate safety measures, poor enforcement of regulations, and overcrowded vessels. The government’s new awareness campaign is aimed at reducing avoidable deaths on waterways.
