Ebonyi Govt Probes Ishiagu Mining Site Collapse that Killed Two
The Ebonyi State Government has opened an investigation into the recent collapse of a mining pit at Ihietutu, Ishiagu in Ivo Local Government Area, which left two people dead and three others injured.

The confirmation came from Mr. Chidi Onyia, the State Commissioner for Solid Minerals, who visited the site alongside federal mining officials and security agencies.
Onyia said early indications suggest the collapse may have been caused by natural factors, not negligence, despite speculation that the operating company, Greenfield Metals Ltd., had been reckless.
“Mining, like many industries worldwide, comes with hazards. From our preliminary findings, this was a natural occurrence and not a result of negligence. Investigation is ongoing by all regulatory bodies, including the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals, Police, DSS, and NSCDC, to ensure transparency. If we find recklessness, we will act accordingly,” he said.
He also expressed condolences to the victims’ families while dismissing rumors that unauthorized miners were involved.
Onyia stressed that the state does not condone illegal mining and respects only permits issued by the federal government. He urged the public not to worsen the grief of affected families by spreading false claims.
Community leader and chairman of the Ihietutu Development Union Board of Trustees, Prince Fabian Chukwu, defended Greenfield Metals, noting the company had consistently met its obligations to locals.
“They built the road to this site and never delayed in giving the community its due entitlements. That is why we stand by them in this unfortunate incident,” he said.
Greenfield Metals has suspended operations at the site pending the outcome of investigations. Regulatory bodies are expected to release a detailed report once inquiries are completed.
