farmers, herders conflict

According to Bauchi State Police Command spokesperson Ahmed Wakil, the conflict erupted on Friday after the body of a 40-year-old farmer was discovered in a farmland area.

The village head, Emmanuel Bulus, reported the incident on August 7 after the farmer failed to return home. A search party found his body on the farm, prompting Bulus to alert the authorities.

Responding swiftly, a police team led by Divisional Police Officer SP Fitoka Golda recovered the body and took it to Bogoro General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

Preliminary investigations suggest the farmer was killed by unidentified assailants. The news sparked retaliation from irate locals, who attacked herders, killing approximately 20 cows19 sheep, and injuring several other animals.

Wakil confirmed that police arrested Ahmadu Mairiga, the suspected perpetrator of the farmer’s killing, and rescued about 249 cows from further harm.

Bauchi State Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu visited the scene, meeting with the Bogoro council chairman, Fulani community leaders (Ardo), Sayawa leaders, and other stakeholders.

Addressing villagers gathered at the Bogoro Divisional Police Headquarters, Aliyu urged calm and patience while investigations continue:

“We are taking all necessary steps to uncover the truth and ensure justice is served. Do not take the law into your own hands.”

The Bogoro area, like many farming communities in northern Nigeria, has been plagued by recurring tensions between farmers and herders over land use and grazing routes, often escalating into violent confrontations.
