Train Coach Breaks Away in Lagos, Sparks Panic on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway
Panic spread along the Ladipo stretch of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway on Thursday morning after a train coach disconnected mid-transit, bringing traffic to a halt and alarming residents and commuters.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:00 a.m., when the rear compartment of a moving train detached unexpectedlyduring its journey from Ogba Ayo in Ogun State to Apapa, Lagos.
Eyewitness Oloruntoba Omodele, who was near the scene, described the moment as sudden and frightening.
“Everyone was shocked by what happened, but thankfully, no lives were lost,” Omodele said.
No Casualties, But Rising Safety Concerns
While there were no reported injuries or fatalities, the event caused significant disruption and renewed concerns over transportation safety in one of Lagos’s busiest corridors.
The Ladipo area, already notorious for its heavy traffic and urban congestion, was plunged into confusion as cars backed up and pedestrians scrambled to understand what was happening.
Emergency Teams Respond Quickly
Emergency responders arrived on the scene within minutes to clear the tracks and restore traffic flow. Their timely intervention helped prevent the situation from escalating.
However, officials have yet to issue a formal statement on what caused the mechanical failure.
Experts Call for Urgent Investigation
Transportation experts are calling for a swift inquiry into the incident, urging Nigerian railway authorities to enforce stricter maintenance standards, especially in high-density routes like Lagos.
They warn that recurring transportation failures, whether on the road or rail, could undermine public trust in the safety of Nigeria’s infrastructure systems.
