PCN Shuts 486 Drug Outlets in Niger State Over Regulatory Violations

The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) has sealed 486 pharmaceutical outlets in Niger State for multiple regulatory infractions, including unlicensed operations and the sale of controlled drugs.

The action followed an extensive inspection exercise across nine local government areas, according to Dr. Suleiman Ciroma, Head of Enforcement at PCN Headquarters, who briefed reporters at the Council’s North Central Zonal Office in Minna on Friday.

The sealed premises included:

  • 69 pharmacies

  • 127 patent medicine shops

  • 290 unlicensed outlets

A total of 672 establishments across Agaie, Bida, Tafa, Chanchaga, Lapai, Paikoro, Bosso, Suleja, and Gurara LGAs were inspected during the exercise.

Ciroma explained that the inspection uncovered:

  • Illegal operations of unlicensed outlets

  • Unauthorized clinical practices

  • Non-compliance with pharmaceutical regulations

  • Sale of controlled substances without approval

  • Unapproved training of apprentices

He confirmed that one individual was arrested for obstructing PCN inspectors and will be prosecuted.

The enforcement drive, Ciroma said, was aimed at ensuring that Nigerians receive safe, high-quality pharmaceutical services.

“The inspection was focused on professional ethics, staff qualifications, facility standards, and compliance with pharmaceutical procedures. We advise the public to patronize only licensed outlets, identifiable by their current licenses,” he stated.

He praised Niger State residents for cooperating during the exercise and assured that nationwide enforcement will continue to curb the distribution of fake and substandard medicines.
