Edo Civil Servant Jailed for Receiving Double Salary from Two Government Jobs

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured the conviction of Ewere Morgan Eseosa, a civil servant in Edo State, for fraudulently receiving salaries from two government institutions at the same time.

According to the ICPC, investigations revealed that Eseosa was simultaneously on the payroll of the University of Beninand the Ikpoba Okha Local Government Council.

This dual employment scheme allowed him to unlawfully collect a total of ₦1,328,255.47 in unearned wages.

ICPC prosecutor Dennis Nnaemeka Okoro arraigned Eseosa before the Edo State High Court on two counts of fraud and obtaining money by false pretense, in violation of Sections 419 and 421 of the Criminal Code Act 2004.

Following a plea bargain, the charges were reduced from two counts to one in case number B/CD/ICPC/2C/2024.

Presiding judge Justice Williams Aziegbemhin sentenced Eseosa to one year in prison or an alternative fine of ₦150,000.

In addition, the convict was ordered to repay ₦1,328,255.47 to the Federal Government of Nigeria through the ICPC Recovery Account.

The Commission described the case as a “flagrant breach of anti-corruption regulations” and reiterated its commitment to tackling fraud in public service.
