Wike Accused of Undermining PDP Ahead of 2027

A fresh political storm is brewing within Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as Umar Sani, a senior party figure, has accused Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, of deliberately working to weaken the party.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Sani alleged that Wike is aligning his political moves to favor President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign, and ensuring that no serious opposition will stand in the way.

According to Sani, the PDP’s current challenges are the result of both external pressures and internal missteps.

“At the moment,” Sani said, “the people in the party are incapacitated by so many factors because they were part and parcel of how the PDP has been plunging.”

He pointed to what he described as poor leadership from the PDP Governors Forum, noting:

  • The loss of the governors of Akwa Ibom and Delta States.

  • A high risk of losing the governor of Rivers State next.

  • Weak responses to defections and declining party influence.

Sani emphasized that under Bala Mohammed’s tenure as forum chairman, the party has seen significant defections that have weakened its position ahead of the next general election.

He further alleged that Wike’s “factor” is a deliberate one — claiming the minister is making “concerted efforts to ensure that the PDP does not survive”, all in a bid to clear the path for Tinubu’s 2027 ambitions.

Despite these claims, Sani expressed optimism about the PDP’s resilience. “The PDP is like the beetle,” he remarked. “It never dies.”
