Lekki Borehole Water Likely Contaminated, Says Lagos Official
Mahmood Adegbite, the Permanent Secretary in the Lagos State Office of Drainage Services, has raised serious concerns about the quality of borehole water in the Lekki axis.

Speaking at a recent stakeholders’ meeting, Adegbite cautioned that residents who rely on boreholes for drinking water may be consuming contaminated water due to untreated wastewater in the area.
“On the wastewater treatment, I will say anybody digging a borehole within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call ‘contaminated water,’” he stated.
Adegbite highlighted the potential health risks linked to the current situation, pointing out that untreated wastewater can easily seep into groundwater, leading to waterborne diseases.
He emphasized that the state’s wastewater treatment plans, once implemented, could significantly reduce these risks and ensure safer water for residents.
“If we are able to treat all the water within this axis, which we have plans for, we should be able to eradicate any form of disease that may occur as a result of non-treatment of our waste,” he added.
