Troops Recover AK-47 After Clash with Armed Herders in Benue

Troops from the Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have recovered an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and live ammunition during a routine farm patrol in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State.

According to Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer for OPWS, the operation took place on August 13, 2025, near Mbakyior community, a suspected crossing point used by armed herders.

Zubairu explained that while on patrol to safeguard rural communities and farmlands, troops encountered armed herders who attempted to flee and opened fire. The soldiers responded with prompt, coordinated return fire, forcing the attackers to withdraw.

A subsequent search of the area led to the recovery of:

  • One AK-47 rifle.

  • One magazine.

  • Three rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

Security personnel have since maintained both day and night patrols in the area to:

  • Prevent further intrusions.

  • Boost civilian confidence.

  • Ensure farming and other economic activities can continue without fear of attack.

OPWS Force Commander, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their professionalism, discipline, and swift tactical response.

He urged them to remain vigilant and responsive to credible intelligence from local communities, reaffirming his commitment to ensuring lasting peace in Benue and other states within the OPWS Joint Operations Area.
