Peter Obi Threatens to Sue Lawyer Deji Adeyanju

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has threatened to sue well-known Nigerian human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, over alleged defamatory posts on social media.

Obi’s legal team, Ejesimen & Co Madiba Chambers (SAN), accused Adeyanju of repeatedly making disparaging remarks about the former governor on X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms.

One post cited in the legal notice was published on August 21, where Adeyanju alleged that Obi had embezzled state funds to support his family business.

In the same post, Adeyanju claimed he once met Obi, who allegedly offered him money as “thank you for coming.”

Obi’s lawyers have demanded that Adeyanju:

  • Issue an unconditional apology

  • Publicly retract the alleged defamatory statements

  • Refrain from further disparaging remarks

Failure to do so, they warned, could result in a full lawsuit.

On Wednesday night, Adeyanju posted on his official Facebook page that he is ready to face Obi in court.

His words: “I can’t wait to meet him in court finally. A fraud parading himself as a messiah.”

Adeyanju, a long-time critic of Obi, has consistently maintained that the former governor may never become Nigeria’s president.

He has also been engaged in frequent online clashes with Obi’s supporters, widely known as the Obidients.

Recently, Adeyanju reiterated on Facebook that it was “too late” for Obi to win the presidency.

This legal standoff highlights the growing tensions between political figures and outspoken activists in Nigeria’s online space. It also underscores how platforms like X and Facebook have become central battlegrounds for shaping public opinion.
