Obi Criticizes Tinubu Govt for Approving ₦142bn Bus Terminals

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticized the Federal Government’s approval of ₦142 billionfor the construction of new bus terminals across Nigeria, describing it as a clear case of misplaced priorities.

The decision was reached at the most recent Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, where the government approved the construction of modern transport terminals in all six geopolitical zones.

Reacting via a post on his official X (Twitter) handle, Obi argued that the move highlighted the Tinubu administration’s “lack of competence, lack of focus, and poor leadership.”

He emphasized that the real difference between success and failure in development lies in how a nation prioritizes scarce resources.

“In the 2024 budget, the entire allocation for all federal university teaching hospitals and federal psychiatric centres nationwide is less than ₦100 billion, yet the government approved ₦142 billion for bus terminals,” Obi wrote.

Obi called the decision disturbing, stressing that healthcare remains one of Nigeria’s most critical but grossly underfunded sectors.

He referenced a WHO report that over 20 million Nigerians live with mental health conditions, arguing that government spending should be directed toward strengthening healthcare and social services, not transport terminals.

“This is not only a misplaced priority but a tragic irony of our country. This is not governance. A New Nigeria is Possible,” he added.
