Peter Obi Explains Why He Never Commissioned Projects as Governor of Anambra State
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has said he never commissioned a single project while serving as Governor of Anambra State, insisting that the idea of naming streets or facilities after himself felt "totally irrelevant"in a country struggling with poverty.

Obi made the comments in a widely circulated video, reacting to the recent controversy surrounding the renaming of the Charly Boy Bus Stop in Lagos' Bariga area. The popular stop was renamed Olamide Baddo Bus Stop, sparking nationwide criticism and calls for reversal.
In the viral clip, Obi said that while in office, he deliberately avoided naming any buildings, streets, or institutions after himself or his family, not even the ones he funded.
“I built a facility in a hospital, and the proprietor said it should be named after me or my mother. I said no,” Obi recalled.
“As governor, I refused to let anything be named after me. I didn’t even commission any of the projects I built.”
Obi added that some people have misunderstood his low-key approach to public office, accusing him of not doing enough because he didn’t attach his name to government-funded projects.
“Whatever I did was with public money, so I didn’t see the relevance of putting my name on them,” he explained.
“Even if I become president, my name is not going to be on any of the facilities. All I want is for the facility to function.”
Speaking directly on the Bariga renaming episode, Obi described the entire uproar as “irrelevant” when millions of Nigerians are still struggling to find their next meal.
“Whether they change it to A or B… to me, it is totally irrelevant when you have millions of people who don’t know where their next meal will come from.”
